Star Anise
Star anise is a captivating spice that hails from the fruit of the Illicium verum tree, native to Southeast Asia. It is named for its star-shaped appearance, with each pod containing numerous seeds and a distinct licorice-like flavor. Star anise is a popular spice in both sweet and savory dishes, known for its ability to infuse a rich, aromatic essence. It’s a key component in Chinese five-spice powder, used in braised meats, soups, and marinades. Additionally, it lends its distinctive flavor to many desserts, including baked goods and beverages like mulled wine.
The production of star anise for export involves a meticulous process. The fruit is harvested when green and then sun-dried until it turns a reddish-brown color. After drying, the seeds are extracted from the pods and packaged for export. Star anise is obtained from the pods. Normally, it has 6 – 8 petals, arranged in a star shape with a diameter of 2.5 to 3cm. Each wing has a small, smooth and egg-shaped seed inside. Most of the star anise flower will be dried and exported as dried flowers after harvesting. A small part is used to produce essential oils.
